Project Information:
AA2026E_LunnL_S1 is a plantation forestry project located on the Lunn property in Tasmania. Registered in May 2026, the project is part of the ActivAcre program, a state-wide initiative managed by SFM Environmental Solutions that partners with local farmers to plant trees on under-utilised agricultural land. While the exact area size and coordinates of the Lunn property are not publicly disclosed, land uses in these targeted Tasmanian regions typically involve cattle grazing and agriculture, with the program focusing on less productive hillsides and paddocks.
Plantation forestry projects sequester carbon by establishing and maintaining a new plantation forest for the commercial harvesting of wood products. Under the 2022 Plantation Forestry Methodology, projects must adhere to specific management practices, such as maintaining minimum stocking densities, undertaking planned thinning (for instance, around year 20 to improve log quality), and managing harvest cycles to ensure long-term carbon storage and sustainable timber yields over a nominated permanence period, which is typically 25 years.
The environmental conditions of these Tasmanian agricultural areas generally feature moderate to high rainfall. The soils on these targeted properties are often classified as lower site quality (such as Site Quality 3 or 4) for traditional agriculture, making them less fertile for high-output pasture or cropping but highly conducive to long-rotation commercial tree crops like Pinus radiata or eucalyptus.
An interesting aspect of this project is its inclusion in the broader ActivAcre program, which allows farmers to lease their unproductive farmland for a reliable, annual income without taking on establishment costs or fire risks. In addition to sequestering carbon and producing timber to help address Australia's $4 billion wood product trade deficit, these newly established plantations provide valuable shade and shelter belts that benefit the farmers' existing livestock. By late 2024, the program had already planted over one million trees across almost 1,000 hectares in Tasmania.
