Western Treefarm Project WTP1C - Farleigh

Western Treefarm Project WTP1C - Farleigh is a Plantation Forestry project located in the Shire of Boyup Brook, approximately 31km north-east of Bridgetown in Western Australia. It was registered on July 22, 2026, and covers a project area of 451.81 hectares.

Plantation Forestry projects under the 2022 methodology determination involve sequestering carbon by establishing and maintaining new plantation forests, or by converting an existing short-rotation plantation forest to a long-rotation plantation forest. These projects are specifically designed to continue the commercial harvesting of wood products while maintaining strict management practices to ensure long-term carbon abatement.

The Boyup Brook region is known for a diverse mix of agricultural land uses, including broadacre cropping, sheep and cattle grazing, and significant plantation forestry. The area experiences a Mediterranean climate with moderate to high average annual rainfall of approximately 600mm to 700mm. The local soils predominantly consist of deep lateritic and sandy gravels over structured clays, along with yellow soils and leached sands.

An interesting note about this project is its proponent, Mitsui & Co. Wood Resources Oceania Pty Ltd (MWO). MWO is a major participant in the Australian forestry supply chain, managing over 6,200 hectares of plantations and exporting certified sustainable woodchips internationally. Additionally, the project's "Farleigh" name likely pays homage to Eric Farleigh, a prominent local pioneer farmer. In 1985, Farleigh gifted his 650-hectare showcase farm, Rylington Park, to the Boyup Brook Shire to be used for ongoing agricultural training and research for the betterment of the farming community.
