Left Arm Planting Project

Project Information:

The Left Arm Planting Project is an environmental planting initiative located near the locality of Nangus, approximately 20 kilometers west of Gundagai in the Riverina region of New South Wales. Registered on September 18, 2025, the project covers an area of 14.86 hectares. The proponent, Pollack Ag Pty Ltd, is an established agricultural entity in the district, suggesting the project is integrated into an existing farming operation.

The project operates under the Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings-FullCAM 2024 methodology. This method requires the establishment of permanent forest cover using species native to the local area. Unlike commercial forestry, these plantings are not intended for harvest; rather, they are designed to store carbon, enhance biodiversity, and provide ancillary benefits such as shelter for livestock. The 2024 iteration of this methodology utilizes the Full Carbon Accounting Model (FullCAM) to model tree growth and calculate the carbon abatement, allowing for a mix of tree and shrub species that reflect the structure of the local vegetation community.

Regionally, the Gundagai and Nangus area is characterized by a mix of grazing (sheep and cattle) and dryland cropping. The landscape consists of undulating slopes and river flats associated with the Murrumbidgee River catchment. The environment is classified as temperate with a reliable average annual rainfall of approximately 700mm, which is conducive to establishing native woodland without the need for permanent irrigation. Soils in the vicinity typically range from alluvial loams on lower ground to red texture-contrast soils (chromosols) on the slopes, providing a suitable substrate for the mixed-species planting planned for this site.
