Project Information:

AA2025R_AskriggL_S1 is a Plantation Forestry project located at the historic 'Askrigg' property in Gretna, Tasmania, approximately 20km northwest of the regional hub of New Norfolk. Registered in July 2025, the project covers roughly 44 hectares of rural land in the Derwent Valley. The region is characterized by a mix of grazing, forestry, and specialized agriculture, including Tasmania's famous hop fields along the Derwent River.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. This specific activity involves establishing a new plantation forest on land that has been clear of forest for at least seven years (typically pasture), with the dual aim of sequestering carbon and producing commercial wood products. The project is managed by SFM Environmental Solutions, a prominent Tasmanian forest manager, on behalf of The Trust Company (Australia) Limited.

Environmentally, the Gretna region sits in a partial rain shadow of the Central Highlands, receiving moderate annual rainfall between 500mm and 700mm. The soils in the Derwent Valley are generally fertile, ranging from alluvial deposits near the river flats to basalt and dolerite-derived clays on the slopes, making them well-suited for both agriculture and forestry.

An interesting historical note regarding this project is its location on the 'Askrigg' estate. The Askrigg homestead is a heritage-listed property dating back to the 1820s, originally settled by John Terry and named after his home village in Yorkshire. While the carbon project focuses on the agricultural land, the property itself is a significant piece of Tasmania's colonial history.
