Knobolas Carbon Forestry Project

Project Information:

The Knobolas Carbon Forestry Project is a plantation forestry project located approximately 25 kilometers southeast of Wellington in the Central West region of New South Wales. Registered in December 2025, the project covers 298 hectares within the Dubbo Regional local government area. The site is situated near the locality of Wuuluman, a rural area traditionally characterized by mixed farming, including grazing and cropping.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. This methodology credits the carbon sequestered in trees established for commercial timber harvesting. Unlike environmental plantings, which are permanent conservation forests, plantation forestry projects involve a rotational harvest cycle where trees are planted, grown, harvested for wood products, and replanted. To be eligible, the project must establish a new plantation on land that has been clear of native forest for at least seven years, ensuring that the activity represents a genuine change in land use.

Environmentally, the Wellington region typically experiences a moderate rainfall climate, averaging around 620mm annually. The soils in this area are predominantly Red Chromosols (red-brown earths) and loams, which are well-suited to the project's aim of establishing softwood timber. The project has also secured significant financial backing; in late 2025, the proponent, Lagom Pty. Ltd. (as trustee for the Rantson Discretionary Trust), was awarded $674,000 under the Australian Government's "Support Plantation Establishment" program to establish 337 hectares of softwood plantation, confirming the commercial focus of the operation.
