Canavans Run Environmental Planting Project

Project Information:
Canavans Run Environmental Planting Project is an environmental planting project located in Mount Eccles, approximately 15 kilometers north of Leongatha in the South Gippsland region of Victoria. Registered in July 2025, the project covers 258 hectares of land that was historically used for high-rainfall grazing operations. The project is situated within the Strzelecki Ranges, an area renowned for its fertile soils and lush, green landscapes.
The project operates under the 2024 Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings-FullCAM methodology. This involves establishing and maintaining a permanent mix of native tree and shrub species designed to replicate the structure and composition of the local vegetation community. Unlike commercial forestry, these plantings are not intended for harvest; instead, they are designed to sequester carbon permanently while enhancing local biodiversity.
The Mount Eccles region is characterized by a "high rainfall" climate, a feature highlighted in the sale of the property just months prior to the project's registration. The land, formerly known as the "Canavans Run" property, was a significant cattle and sheep fattening estate before its transition to carbon farming. The soil in this part of South Gippsland is typically deep, fertile clay-loam, often of volcanic origin, supporting vigorous vegetation growth.
Bupa Innovations (ANZ) Pty Ltd acts as the proponent for this project, signaling a corporate "insetting" or direct investment strategy where the healthcare group generates Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) to offset its own operational emissions. This aligns with Bupa's broader global sustainability goals to become a Net Zero business by 2040.
