Project Information:

Currawong Schedule 2 2025 ACCU-Scheme Project is a Plantation Forestry project located across multiple distinct forestry regions in Tasmania, with significant aggregated areas situated near Ridgley (south of Burnie in the North West) and Buckland (on the East Coast). Registered in August 2025, the project covers a total area of approximately 1,322 hectares. The project is managed by Forico, Tasmania’s largest private forest management company, on behalf of The Trust Company (Australia) Limited (Trustee for the Tasmanian Forest Operating Sub Trust).

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. Specifically, the project activity involves converting short-rotation plantation forests, typically harvested every 12-15 years for pulpwood, into long-rotation plantations. This transition requires active management such as thinning and pruning to produce higher-value sawlogs harvested on cycles often exceeding 25 years. By extending the growth period, the trees sequester carbon for a longer duration compared to the baseline short-rotation regime.

The environmental conditions vary across the project's dispersed sites. The North West sites (near Burnie and Smithton) are characterized by high rainfall (often exceeding 1,200mm annually) and highly productive, red basaltic soils known as Ferrosols. The East Coast sites (near Buckland) typically experience more moderate rainfall and sit on variable clay and loam soils. The region is heavily utilized for commercial forestry and agriculture. Forico is notable for its detailed Natural Capital reporting and stewardship of over 170,000 hectares of Tasmanian certified plantation and natural forest.
