Tiwi Plantation Carbon Project Two

Project Information:

Tiwi Plantation Carbon Project Two is a plantation forestry project located on Melville Island (part of the Tiwi Islands), approximately 80km north of Darwin in the Northern Territory. It was registered in August 2025 and covers an initial 2,859.54 ha, with additional areas added via a project variation in November 2025.

Plantation forestry projects under the 2022 Methodology Determination involve establishing new plantations, converting short-rotation plantations to long-rotation ones, or maintaining existing forests that would otherwise revert to agriculture. These projects sequester carbon in living tree biomass and long-term harvested wood products, and they must adhere to standard commercial forestry management practices, harvest cycles, and specific stocking densities to generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs).

The Melville Island and broader Tiwi Islands region is primarily known for Aboriginal land ownership, savanna woodlands, and commercial forestry operations. The area experiences a tropical monsoonal climate characterized by extremely high wet-season rainfall. While the island's soils are generally sandy, lateritic red earths that are relatively nutrient-poor, the intense tropical conditions support rapid tree growth.

This project sequesters carbon by establishing and maintaining a new plantation forest for the commercial harvesting of wood products. Managed by Tiwi Plantations Pty Ltd, a wholly Indigenous-owned entity, in partnership with Plantation Management Partners Pty Ltd, the project primarily cultivates species like Acacia mangium while exploring new Eucalyptus varieties. It forms part of a significant "second rotation" strategy to expand the island's commercial forestry estate. At a massive scale, the project seamlessly dovetails with existing savanna fire management initiatives and older plantations to support local employment and long-term economic sustainability for the Tiwi community.
