Wirragoona Soil Carbon Project

Project Information:
Wirragoona Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located near The Rock, approximately 25km southwest of Wagga Wagga in the Riverina region of New South Wales. Registered in August 2025, the project covers a project area of roughly 338 hectares. The property is situated in a region renowned for mixed farming, where land use typically combines winter cropping (such as wheat and canola) with sheep and cattle grazing.
The project operates under the 2021 Soil Carbon methodology, which credits landholders for increasing Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) stocks. To achieve this, the proponent, Glenory Nominees Pty Ltd, is implementing activities such as altering stocking rates to improve vegetation cover and rejuvenating pastures through seeding or pasture cropping. These changes are designed to boost biomass production and soil health, which are measured over time using physical soil sampling and modelling to calculate carbon credits.
The Riverina environment generally experiences a temperate climate with winter-dominant rainfall, averaging between 500mm and 600mm annually. The local soils are typically Red Chromosols (Red Brown Earths) and Dermosols, productive but often hard-setting soils that benefit significantly from increased organic matter to improve structure and water-holding capacity. Select Carbon Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of Shell Energy, acts as the service provider for this project, assisting with the complex measurement and reporting requirements.
