Horsley Park Bioenergy Facility

Project Information:

Horsley Park Bioenergy Facility is an animal effluent and organic waste processing project located in Horsley Park, New South Wales, approximately 40 kilometers west of the Sydney CBD. Registered in November 2025, the facility is a significant infrastructure development situated within the Western Sydney Parklands region, specifically co-located with the Austral Bricks Plant 2. The project is designed to process up to 150,000 tonnes of organic waste per annum, including animal effluent, to generate renewable biogas.

The project operates under the Carbon Farming Initiative (Animal Effluent Management) Methodology. This methodology rewards projects that capture and destroy methane emissions generated from the anaerobic decomposition of animal manure, which would otherwise be released into the atmosphere. While traditionally applied to on-farm piggeries or dairies, this facility applies the method in a centralized bioenergy context, utilizing anaerobic digestion tanks to capture methane. The gas is then combusted to power the adjacent brick manufacturing kilns, replacing fossil natural gas.

The Horsley Park region is characterized by a mix of heavy industrial land use, historically dominated by quarrying and brickworks due to the abundance of clay soils (Wianamatta Shale), and peri-urban activities. The climate is temperate with a tendency towards hotter summers compared to coastal Sydney, and the area receives moderate rainfall. The facility itself represents a strategic partnership between Brickworks and Delorean Corporation, aiming to reduce the brick plant's Scope 1 emissions by approximately 50% through this "behind the meter" renewable gas supply.
