Three Brooks and Winnejup 2025

Project Information:
Three Brooks and Winnejup 2025 is a plantation forestry project located in the rural locality of Winnejup, approximately 16km northeast of Bridgetown in the South West region of Western Australia. Registered in August 2025, the project covers a total area of 638.21 hectares. The project takes its name from the "Three Brooks" property (specifically located around Dalmore Road), a site with a history of blue gum forestry and grazing.
The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. This methodology credits the carbon sequestered by establishing new plantation forests or converting short-rotation plantations to long-rotation forests. In this specific case, the project involves establishing a plantation for commercial harvest, likely utilizing species such as Eucalyptus globulus (Blue Gum) or Pinus radiata, which are common in the region. The carbon stored in the trees and the long-term wood products created after harvest generates the Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs).
The Winnejup region is situated within a high-rainfall zone, receiving approximately 700mm to 900mm of precipitation annually, which is ideal for commercial timber production. The local terrain is described as undulating with granite outcrops and creek lines. Soils in the area are typically a mix of lateritic gravels, strong granite soils, and productive sandy loams, which provide the necessary drainage and nutrients for rapid tree growth.
The project proponent is Roy Hill Holdings Pty Ltd, a major Australian iron ore mining company. This project appears to be part of Roy Hill’s broader strategy to offset Scope 1 emissions from its Pilbara mining operations to meet safeguard mechanism baselines or corporate net-zero targets. By investing in land like the Three Brooks property, which was marketed in 2017 as a harvested plantation site suitable for redevelopment, Roy Hill secures a direct supply of carbon offsets.
