Henderson Landfill Gas Upgrade Project

Project Information:
The Henderson Landfill Gas Upgrade Project is a landfill gas capture operation located at the Henderson Waste Recovery Park in Henderson, Western Australia, approximately 25 kilometers south of the Perth CBD. Registered on December 5, 2022, the project is operated by LMS Energy Pty Ltd in partnership with the City of Cockburn. The site sits within a dedicated industrial zone adjacent to the Australian Marine Complex, a region characterised by heavy industry, shipbuilding, and waste management activities.
Operating under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2015, the project focuses on upgrading the existing gas collection infrastructure at the landfill. This involves installing new vertical gas extraction wells and pipework to improve the capture efficiency of methane generated by decomposing legacy (historical) and non-legacy waste. By capturing methane that would otherwise vent into the atmosphere and combusting it, often to generate renewable electricity at the on-site Henderson Renewable Energy Facility, the project converts the gas into less potent carbon dioxide, earning carbon credits for the net abatement achieved above historical baseline levels.
The project is situated on the Swan Coastal Plain, an environment defined by a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The local landscape typically features sandy soils, specifically the Spearwood and Bassendean dune systems, which overlay limestone formations, a geological factor that often necessitates careful management of leachate and gas migration in landfill operations.
