Qenos Botany Boiler Conversion Project

Project Information:
Qenos Botany Boiler Conversion Project is a fuel switching project located at the Botany Industrial Park in Banksmeadow, approximately 10km south of the Sydney CBD in NSW. It was registered in August 2022 and its area size is confined to the specific industrial facility footprint.
Industrial and Commercial Emissions Reduction projects involve improving energy efficiency and reducing process emissions by modifying, removing, or replacing existing emissions-producing equipment, or by changing the mix of fuel and energy sources used by that equipment.
The Banksmeadow and Botany area is known for heavy industrial and commercial manufacturing operations, as well as large-scale port logistics. The coastal Sydney area is considered high rainfall and soils are generally coastal sands (locally known as the Botany Sand Beds) and urban clay fill.
This project was set up to lower the carbon intensity of the facility's steam boilers by switching energy sources. Interestingly, Qenos was historically Australia's only manufacturer of polyethylene, utilizing raw ethane piped directly from South Australia. However, the project's long-term operations have been cut short, as the Qenos Group went into voluntary administration in April 2024, resulting in the permanent shutdown and make-safe decommissioning of the Botany facility.
