Newline Road Landfill Gas Upgrade Project

Project Information:
Newline Road Landfill Gas Upgrade Project is a landfill gas electricity generation project located at the Newline Road Engineered Landfill in Raymond Terrace, approximately 26km north of Newcastle in New South Wales. It was registered in August 2022 and, while the specific carbon project area is unlisted, it operates within a commercial and local council landfill site that has the operational capacity to accept up to 200,000 tonnes of dry waste each year.
Electricity Generation from Landfill Gas projects involve upgrading or installing gas collection systems to capture methane gas generated by decomposing organic landfill waste. The captured methane is then combusted via an electricity generation system to produce power, converting it into carbon dioxide and significantly reducing its overall global warming potential. This specific project upgrades an existing landfill gas collection system to capture and combust gas generated at the landfill from both legacy and non-legacy waste.
The Raymond Terrace area within the Hunter Region is known for a broad mix of urban, industrial, and agricultural land uses. The area experiences a moderate to high rainfall coastal climate, and local soils generally consist of residual sandy clays, siltstone, and sandstone common to the Hunter floodplain.
Interestingly, this project transitioned from the 2015 Landfill Gas methodology to the 2021 Electricity Generation methodology in June 2024. In May 2026, the participant name was updated from LMS Energy Pty Ltd to VELMS JOINT VENTURE PTY LTD. Furthermore, in December 2024, the site's primary operator, Veolia, was issued a $30,000 fine by the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) for failing to adequately cap the landfill and properly manage excess leachate wastewater, which posed a potential risk to groundwater, nearby wetlands, and the Williams River.
