Project Information:

The Newline Road Landfill Gas Upgrade Project is a landfill gas electricity generation project located at the Raymond Terrace Resource Recovery Park, approximately 5km east of Raymond Terrace in the Hunter Region of New South Wales. Registered in August 2022, the project is operated by LMS Energy, Australia's largest landfill biogas company, in partnership with the site's landfill operator, Veolia.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Electricity Generation from Landfill Gas) Methodology Determination 2021. This methodology credits emissions reductions achieved by capturing methane, a potent greenhouse gas released by decomposing organic waste, and combusting it in gas engines to generate renewable electricity. By converting methane into carbon dioxide and energy, the project significantly reduces the global warming potential of the landfill's emissions while contributing base-load power to the local grid.

The Raymond Terrace area is characterized by a warm temperate climate with moderate rainfall, averaging around 800mm annually. The surrounding region typically features alluvial and clay-based soils common to the Hunter River floodplain, which are often utilized for mixed farming and industrial purposes. This specific project involves upgrading an existing gas collection system to improve capture efficiency from both legacy and non-legacy waste, ensuring that gas that would otherwise escape into the atmosphere is beneficially utilized.
