Newline Road Landfill Gas Upgrade Project

Project Information:

Newline Road Landfill Gas Upgrade Project is an electricity generation from landfill gas project located at Raymond Terrace, approximately 26km north of Newcastle in NSW. It was registered in August 2022 and its exact project area is unknown, as it operates within a commercial landfill facility.

Electricity generation from landfill gas projects involve capturing methane gas emitted by decomposing organic waste and combusting it in an engine to generate electricity. This process converts methane, a highly potent greenhouse gas, into carbon dioxide, effectively reducing the site's overall emissions. Standard requirements include the installation of robust gas collection infrastructure and continuous, accurate metering of the energy content of the gas destroyed.

The Raymond Terrace area and broader Hunter Region are well known for coal mining, cattle grazing, and viticulture. The area is considered to have a humid subtropical climate with high rainfall, and the regional soils are generally composed of silty clays, sandy loams, and underlying sandstone.

This project is operated by LMS Energy Pty Ltd and involves upgrading an existing gas collection system to capture and combust gas from legacy and non-legacy waste at the Veolia-operated Newline Road Landfill. The site itself is a highly engineered resource recovery facility licensed to handle up to 200,000 tonnes of commercial and municipal waste annually. Interestingly, while the carbon project successfully mitigates airborne greenhouse gas emissions, the host landfill property made news in late 2024 when site operator Veolia was fined $30,000 by the NSW Environment Protection Authority for failing to adequately manage liquid leachate levels.
