River Murray Forest - Lang Site (Revoked)

Project Information:

River Murray Forest - Lang Site (Revoked) is an environmental planting project located approximately 20km north-east of Renmark in the Riverland region of South Australia. It was registered in September 2015 and covers an area of 64.84 hectares.

Environmental planting projects involve establishing permanent plantings of a mix of native tree species on land that has been cleared of forest for at least five years prior to commencement. To successfully sequester carbon and attain sustainable forest cover, block plantings under these methods typically require a minimum planting density of 200 stems per hectare. This specific project utilised the CFI Reforestation Modelling Tool methodology, which estimates carbon abatement mathematically using models based on species, local climate, and soil data, rather than relying on direct physical measurements.

The Riverland region surrounding Renmark is characterised by a semi-arid climate with low annual rainfall and high summer temperatures. The local agricultural landscape is heavily reliant on the Murray River and is widely known for irrigated horticulture such as viticulture and fruit orchards, alongside traditional grazing and dryland cropping operations. Soils in this region are predominantly fragile, typically featuring sandy profiles or sandy loams at the surface.

The project was originally proposed and managed by the South Australian Department for Environment and Water. However, it was officially revoked under section 30 of the Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) Rule on May 14, 2018, terminating its participation and generation of Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) within the scheme.
