River Murray Forest - Frahn Site (Revoked)
ERF101837
Project Information:
River Murray Forest - Frahn Site (Revoked) is an environmental planting project located approximately 10km southeast of Renmark in the Riverland region of South Australia. Registered in September 2015, the project covered a small area of 20.77 hectares. It was subsequently revoked in March 2016, less than a year after registration, meaning it is no longer an active participant in the carbon market.
The project operated under the Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI) utilizing the "Quantifying Carbon Sequestration by Permanent Environmental Plantings" methodology. This method involves establishing permanent plantings of native tree species on land that had been cleared of forest for at least five years. The goal is to sequester carbon by restoring native vegetation density to forest levels. As part of the South Australian Government's broader "River Murray Forest" initiative, this project aimed to create a corridor of native vegetation along the river from the Victorian border to the Coorong to improve biodiversity and connectivity.
The Riverland region is a semi-arid environment, typically receiving low annual rainfall of around 260mm. The landscape is defined by the Murray River, with immediate surrounds supporting irrigated horticulture such as vineyards, citrus, and almond orchards, transitioning to dryland grazing and conservation areas further from the water. The soils in this specific vicinity are generally sandy loams and calcareous earth, typical of the Mallee region. The project's revocation under Section 33 of the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) Act 2011 indicates a voluntary withdrawal by the proponent, the Department for Environment and Water, likely due to administrative consolidation or changing strategic priorities for this specific site.
