River Murray Forest - Lazaroff Site (Revoked)

Project Information:

River Murray Forest - Lazaroff Site (Revoked) was an environmental planting project located approximately 5km west of the township of Mannum in the Murraylands region of South Australia. Registered in September 2015, the project covered a small area of 27.84 hectares on land previously cleared for agriculture. The project was revoked less than six months later in March 2016 under Section 33 of the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) Act 2011, which indicates a voluntary revocation where no carbon credits had yet been issued.

The project operated under the Quantifying Carbon Sequestration by Permanent Environmental Plantings of Native Tree Species using the CFI Reforestation Modelling Tool methodology. This involves establishing permanent forest cover using a mix of native species, typically at a stocking density sufficient to achieve forest cover (often greater than 200 stems per hectare) and improve local biodiversity. The use of the Reforestation Modelling Tool (RMT) allowed proponents to estimate carbon stocks based on climate and soil data rather than requiring direct field measurements for every tree.

The Murraylands region surrounding Mannum is characterized by a semi-arid to Mediterranean climate with relatively low rainfall, typically averaging around 300mm to 400mm annually. The landscape supports land uses such as dryland cropping and grazing. Soils in this area are diverse but often include sandy loams, calcareous earths (calcrete), and red-brown earths common to the South Australian Mallee. The project was likely part of the wider "River Murray Forest" initiative championed by the South Australian Government (Department for Environment and Water), which aimed to restore native vegetation along the river corridor to improve water quality and habitat connectivity. The revocation of this specific site suggests it may have been consolidated into a larger project or withdrawn due to administrative reasons.
