River Murray Forest - Watts Site (Revoked)
ERF101833
Project Information:
River Murray Forest - Watts Site (Revoked) was an environmental planting project located approximately 12km south of Loxton in the Riverland region of South Australia. Registered in September 2015, the project covered a small area of 17.65 hectares within the District Council of Loxton Waikerie. The project was revoked less than a year later, in March 2016, and was managed by the South Australian Department for Environment and Water (DEW).
The project operated under the Carbon Farming (Quantifying Carbon Sequestration by Permanent Environmental Plantings of Native Tree Species using the CFI Reforestation Modelling Tool) Methodology Determination 2012. This methodology involved establishing permanent plantings of native tree species on land that had been cleared of forest for at least five years prior to commencement. The specific use of the "CFI Reforestation Modelling Tool" (RMT) allowed proponents to model tree growth and carbon sequestration rates based on local climate and soil data rather than relying solely on direct field measurements.
The Loxton region is characterized by a semi-arid climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 260mm. The landscape is defined by the "Loxton Land System," which features undulating plains, low dunefields, and sandy to sandy-loam soils that are often calcareous and alkaline. Agriculture in the surrounding area is a mix of irrigated horticulture (citrus, almonds, and stone fruit) near the river and dryland farming or grazing on the sandy rises.
This specific site was part of the wider "River Murray Forest" initiative, a government-led program designed to restore river red gum and mallee vegetation corridors along the Murray River. The project was revoked under Section 33 of the CFI Act, which indicates a "voluntary revocation of declaration" where no Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) had been issued. This suggests the project was withdrawn by the proponent before it began generating credits, potentially due to administrative consolidation or changes in land management plans.
