Project Information:

Penola Plantations 2027 P27-4 Killara North is a plantation forestry project located near Range Road in the rural locality of Killara, approximately 15 kilometres southwest of Casterton in south-western Victoria. It was registered in September 2026 and covers an area of 86.96 hectares. The project is situated in the well-known "Green Triangle," an area stretching across the South Australian and Victorian borders that is famous for its extensive commercial forestry, particularly pine and blue gum plantations, as well as traditional sheep and cattle grazing.

Under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative-Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022, projects sequester carbon by establishing and maintaining a new plantation forest for the commercial harvesting of wood products. The standard requirements dictate that the area must maintain a healthy tree stocking density suitable for commercial logging operations. Specifically, this project engages in the "avoided conversion" of an existing or harvested plantation. Rather than allowing the land to be cleared and permanently converted into non-forested agricultural land, the project ensures the land remains a continuing plantation.

The local environment in the Green Triangle is classified as having moderate to high rainfall, which reliably supports year-round silviculture. The soils in this district typically consist of sandy loams and podzols overlaying clay subsoils, offering an ideal, well-draining growing profile for commercial timber roots.

An interesting note about this specific site is its integration into the broader regional timber market. The "Killara North" block was previously marketed alongside "Killara South" as part of a larger 506.3-hectare rural package within the Fairthorne Forestry & Rural Land Aggregation. Today, the project is safely held and operated by The Trust Company (Australia) Limited acting as the trustee for the Green Triangle Forest Operating Sub Trust, which is a major, active participant in managing large-scale forestry assets across the region.
