Project Information:

Ignite Together Savanna Fire Management project #1 is a savanna fire management project located approximately 30km northeast of Aurukun and 60km south of Weipa on the Cape York Peninsula in Far North Queensland. It was registered in September 2026 and covers a massive 346,482.38 hectares.

Savanna fire management projects involve strategically planned, cool burning during the early dry season. This standard practice is designed to deliberately reduce accumulated fuel loads, which helps prevent the outbreak and severity of unmanaged, high-intensity wildfires later in the dry season.

The remote Cape York area is predominantly used for traditional Indigenous land management, nature conservation, bauxite mining, and cattle grazing. The environment is classified as a high rainfall savanna zone within a tropical monsoon climate, experiencing distinct wet and dry seasons. The region's soils typically consist of bauxite laterites, red and yellow Kandosols (sandy loams), and depositional clays in the lower drainage basins.

This project was established to undertake annual planned burning of the savanna in the high rainfall zone. By proactively managing the landscape, the project reduces the risk of late dry season wildfires, protecting both the local ecosystem and biodiversity. Interestingly, these savanna burning methodologies draw heavily on the traditional land management practices that Indigenous Australians have utilized for tens of thousands of years to care for Country.
