Project Information:

Eastern Maar Reforestation Project is an environmental planting project located at the "Falbala" property in Beech Forest, approximately 30km south of Colac in the Otway Ranges of Victoria. It was registered in September 2026 and covers a project area of 165.38 hectares.

Environmental planting projects involve establishing and maintaining permanent plantings of native tree and shrub species. These methodologies require planting at a sufficient stocking density, typically at least 200 stems per hectare, with the potential to reach a forest cover of at least 20% crown cover and 2 metres in height.

The Beech Forest region features rolling hills and is traditionally known for dairy farming, beef cattle grazing, and forestry operations. The area is classified as having a very high rainfall climate, averaging between 1,550mm and 1,950mm annually, and features deep, freely draining clay loam soils derived from sandstone and mudstone.

The project's activities focus on establishing a permanent mix of native flora that accurately reflects the natural structure and composition of the local native vegetation community. Notably, this project represents a landmark partnership between the proponent, Carbon Neutral Pty Ltd, and the Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation (EMAC). Celebrated as a milestone in land justice and carbon farming, the initiative returns the 252-hectare Falbala property to traditional custodians, delivering significant social and reconciliation outcomes alongside carbon sequestration.
