Spring Valley Soil Carbon Project

Project Information:

Spring Valley Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon project located approximately 10km southeast of Parkes in the Central West region of New South Wales. It was registered in September 2026 and covers 162.62ha.

Soil carbon projects under the Measurement and Models methodology involve implementing new or materially different agricultural management activities designed to increase the amount of carbon stored in the soil. Standard requirements for this method mandate that baseline carbon levels are established through rigorous soil sampling, with subsequent increases measured over time to generate carbon credits.

The Parkes region is known for extensive mixed agriculture, predominantly winter cropping (such as wheat) and sheep grazing. The area is considered to have moderate rainfall, averaging 587mm annually, and soils in the area are generally red-brown earths known as Chromosols.

This project increases carbon in the agricultural soil system by applying nutrients to the land in the form of a synthetic or non-synthetic fertiliser to address a material deficiency. By correcting these soil limitations, plant and root biomass is boosted, leading to more organic matter being drawn into the soil. The project involves RRICE Pty Ltd acting as the proponent for the Richard Rice Family Trust, with operations supported by Select Carbon Pty Ltd, an established carbon farming developer that partners with landholders across Australia.
