Tarwin Carbon Project 1

Tarwin Carbon Project 1 is a soil carbon project located near Tarwin Lower in the South Gippsland region, approximately 167km southeast of Melbourne in Victoria. It was registered in August 2026 and covers a project area of 580.88 ha.

Soil carbon projects operating under the Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models methodology involve conducting rigorous baseline soil sampling, followed by the introduction of one or more materially different land management activities to build soil organic carbon. Carbon stocks must be continually monitored through further soil sampling or modelling.

The South Gippsland area is known for highly productive dairy and beef cattle farming. The region experiences a high rainfall climate, with mean annual rainfall frequently exceeding 900mm across much of the area, and its soils are often highly fertile red ferrosols and clay loams.

This project increases carbon in the agricultural soil by applying synthetic or non-synthetic nutrients to address material deficiencies, and by altering the stocking rate, duration, or intensity of grazing. These activities are designed to promote soil vegetation cover and improve overall soil health.

An interesting note is that the project is managed by AgriProve Solutions Pty Ltd, which is Australia's leading soil carbon project developer. AgriProve is known for pioneering soil carbon projects under the ACCU scheme and partnering with farmers to manage compliance while the landholders focus on on-farm productivity.
