Tarwin Carbon Project 2 is a soil carbon project located near Tarwin Lower, approximately 160km southeast of Melbourne in the South Gippsland region of Victoria. It was registered in August 2026 and covers a project area of 406.66 ha.
Soil carbon projects under the Measurement and Models methodology involve changing agricultural practices to increase the amount of carbon stored in the soil. Standard requirements involve demonstrating an eligible change in land management (such as altering stocking density or grazing duration) and undertaking rigorous baseline soil sampling followed by ongoing measurements to prove that new carbon has been sequestered.
The South Gippsland region is heavily utilized for productive agriculture, predominantly dairy farming, cattle grazing, and vegetable cropping. The environment is considered a high-rainfall zone, typically receiving reliable rainfall between 700mm and 1,000mm annually. Soils in the Tarwin Lower area frequently consist of clay loams, as well as texture-contrast soils such as Sodosols and Podosols.
This project aims to actively build soil carbon by addressing material soil deficiencies with the application of synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers. In tandem with this, the proponent is altering the stocking rate, duration, and intensity of grazing to promote better soil vegetation cover and overall soil health. Interestingly, this project is managed by Agriprove Solutions Pty Ltd and sits alongside a sister project, Tarwin Carbon Project 1, which was registered simultaneously in the same region.
