Project Information:

Lenah2026R_Plenty_S3 is a Plantation Forestry project located near the rural locality of Plenty in the Derwent Valley, approximately 34km northwest of Hobart in Tasmania. It was registered in September 2026 and covers 118.47ha.

Plantation forestry projects involve sequestering carbon by establishing new plantation forests, converting short-rotation plantations to long-rotation, or protecting existing ones from conversion. This specific project avoids the conversion of an existing or harvested plantation to non-forested land by continuing the plantation and maintaining a new forest for the commercial harvesting of wood products.

The Derwent Valley region is well known for its extensive commercial forestry operations, alongside agricultural land uses such as sheep grazing, hop growing, and viticulture. The environment is characterised by a cool temperate climate with moderate to high rainfall, and the regional soils generally consist of fertile sandy loams, clay loams, and podzols.

This project is situated within Lenah Estate, a massive commercial softwood footprint encompassing roughly 18,500 hectares of production pine forest purchased by New Forests in 2020. The land and carbon project are actively managed by SFM Environmental Solutions, an operator known for implementing "Future Focused Forestry" technologies. Notably, SFM has previously trialled advanced early forest fire detection camera systems, such as FireHawk and ForestWatch, across the Lenah Estate to decrease emergency response times and increase community safety.
