Yuulong Carbon and Biodiversity Project

Yuulong Carbon and Biodiversity Project is a Plantation Forestry project located at Yuulong in the Otway Ranges, approximately 30km from Colac and inland from the Great Ocean Road in Victoria. It was registered in August 2026 and covers 79.43 hectares.

Plantation Forestry carbon projects involve managing plantations to sequester and store carbon. Specifically, this project involves transitioning an existing short-rotation plantation forest into a permanent planting. This methodology is applied in situations where a short-term timber or pulp plantation is at risk of being cleared and converted to non-forested land.

The Otway Ranges area is well known for dairy farming, beef cattle grazing, and timber production. The region is characterised by extremely high rainfall, which supports tall wet forests and cool temperate rainforests, and the soils are generally fertile, well-structured clay loams.

The Yuulong property previously produced timber products for over 20 years before this transition. The project proponent, Xavier Duthie, has an extensive professional background in decarbonisation and carbon capture. Set to go live later in 2026, this project is being developed alongside AgroEcology Futures, aiming to transform the property into a permanent, highly productive carbon store that also delivers wide-ranging biodiversity co-benefits for the region.
