'Penola Plantations 2027 P27-2 Nangwarry Central

Penola Plantations 2027 P27-2 Nangwarry Central is a plantation forestry project located near Nangwarry, approximately 20km south of Penola and 30km north-west of Mount Gambier in South Australia. It was registered in July 2026, and while the exact project area is currently undisclosed, it operates within the state's renowned "Green Triangle" region.

Plantation forestry projects involve sequestering carbon by establishing new plantation forests, transitioning to long-rotation cycles, or avoiding the conversion of an existing or harvested plantation to non-forested land. Standard requirements mandate maintaining the plantation forest for the commercial harvesting of wood products and meeting specific tree stocking densities over the permanence period.

The Nangwarry and Penola area's land use is heavily dominated by commercial forestry (particularly radiata pine), agricultural grazing, and viticulture. The region experiences a moderate to high annual rainfall, typically receiving between 620mm and 685mm. Soils generally consist of sandy topsoils, known locally as Nangwarry Sands, overlying clay or limestone (calcrete) basements, which provide suitable drainage and root penetration for robust commercial tree growth.

This project sequesters carbon by avoiding the conversion of an existing or harvested plantation to non-forested land, continuing the forest cycle to yield wood products. It is managed by Timberlands Pacific Pty Ltd on behalf of the Green Triangle Forest Operating Sub Trust. The project contributes to an integrated timber estate spanning the South Australia and Victoria border, an area that has historically supplied around 17% of Australia's entire plantation footprint.
