Minbrie Carbon Farm - Project 1

Project Information:

Minbrie Carbon Farm - Project 1 is an environmental and mallee planting project located in Minbrie, approximately 10km north-northwest of the coastal town of Cowell on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. It was registered on June 2, 2026, and covers an area of 129.76 hectares.

Environmental and mallee planting projects involve establishing and maintaining permanent vegetative cover using native species. Under the FullCAM methodology, these permanent plantings of mallee eucalypt species must be planted at a density and arrangement that will achieve forest cover, meaning they have the potential to reach at least 20% crown cover and a minimum height of two metres at maturity.

The Cowell region on the Eyre Peninsula is widely known for broadacre agriculture, specifically wheat and barley cropping, as well as sheep grazing. The local environment is considered semi-arid with low typical annual rainfall (generally between 250-400mm), and the local soils are largely comprised of sandy loams and calcareous earths.

This project was established to create permanent plantings consisting of mallee eucalypt species, which are highly resilient and well-adapted to the dry conditions of the region. Notably, the project's proponent, Flinders Ports Land Development Pty Ltd, is a subsidiary of Flinders Port Holdings, South Australia's major privately-owned port operator. This highlights an interesting trend of large maritime, infrastructure, and logistics corporate groups engaging directly in local carbon farming to generate Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) and manage their industrial emissions footprint.
