'Penola Plantations 2027 P27-1 Kerr

Penola Plantations 2027 P27-1 Kerr is a plantation forestry project located in western Victoria near the South Australian border, approximately 63km northeast of Mount Gambier. It was registered in July 2026.

Plantation forestry projects under this methodology involve sequestering carbon by avoiding the conversion of an existing or harvested plantation to non-forested land. Standard requirements dictate that proponents must establish and maintain the forest for the commercial harvesting of wood products while keeping an adequate tree stocking density to ensure continuous carbon sequestration.

The project is situated in the renowned "Green Triangle" region, an area widely known for its extensive commercial softwood and hardwood forestry operations alongside livestock grazing and broadacre cropping. The region experiences high rainfall, typically receiving between 600mm and 650mm annually, and soils generally consist of sandy topsoils overlying clay or lateritised basements, which provide excellent drainage for deep-rooted trees.

This project is part of a broader integrated estate of 64 forests spanning the South Australia and Victoria border, managed by Timberlands Pacific Pty Ltd on behalf of the Green Triangle Forest Operating Sub Trust. The Green Triangle region contributes approximately 17% of Australia's entire plantation footprint, and carbon blocks like this one help ensure an ongoing, high-quality timber supply for local industry by preventing productive land from reverting to traditional agricultural use.
