'Stonehaven Carbon Project 1

Stonehaven Carbon Project 1 is a soil carbon project located at the 'Stonehaven' property near Thangool, just south of Biloela in Central Queensland. It was registered in July 2026 and is situated on a property that covers approximately 2,500 hectares.

Soil carbon projects under the 2021 Measurement and Models methodology involve increasing soil organic carbon by changing agricultural practices. The method requires establishing a baseline and directly measuring soil carbon increases over time. Standard requirements involve carrying out eligible management activities, such as altering the stocking rate, duration, or intensity of grazing to promote soil vegetation cover and improve soil health.

The Thangool and Biloela area in the Banana Shire is known for its extensive beef cattle grazing and agricultural operations. The region experiences a sub-tropical to semi-arid climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 660mm, which falls predominantly during the summer monsoonal months. Soils in the region generally consist of texture-contrast soils, cracking clays on the floodplains, and shallow sandy clay loams on the forested ridges.

This project was set up on a fifth-generation, certified organic and biodynamic cattle property run by Dan and Emma-Jane Burnham. To increase carbon in the agricultural soil system, the property has undergone a significant transition in grazing management, which involved cutting four large paddocks into 105 smaller ones. This enabled high-density, time-controlled rotational grazing where every cattle movement is logged, aimed at achieving 100% ground cover with no bare dirt. The property's regenerative practices also form part of the Burnham Regenerative Production Project, delivering co-benefits such as reducing sediment run-off to improve Great Barrier Reef water quality and protecting habitats for threatened species.
