Project Information:

FPC 2026 CP5 is a Plantation Forestry project located approximately 12km west of Boyup Brook in the South West region of Western Australia. It was registered in June 2026 and covers an area of 121.15 hectares.

Plantation forestry projects involve establishing new plantation forests or converting existing short-rotation plantations into long-rotation forests. To comply with standard methodology requirements, the forest must be managed for commercial timber harvesting and maintain appropriate tree stocking densities. This project sequesters carbon by combining both the establishment of a new plantation forest and the conversion of an existing short-rotation forest to a long-rotation one for the commercial harvesting of wood products.

The South West region is well known for broadacre agriculture, viticulture, and extensive commercial forestry operations. The area is considered a high-rainfall zone, experiencing a Mediterranean climate characterised by wet winters and dry summers. Soils in this region are generally lateritic, consisting of gravelly sandy loams and clay bases which provide ideal conditions for large-scale timber plantations.

This project is part of a larger state initiative. The project's proponent, the Forest Products Commission (FPC), is a Western Australian Government trading enterprise responsible for developing and marketing the state's renewable timber resources. In 2022, the Western Australian Government amended the Forest Products Act 2000 to legally empower the FPC to own and trade Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs). This legislative update was paired with a record $350 million state investment to expand WA's softwood pine plantations, aiming to sequester millions of tonnes of carbon while securing critical materials for the local housing and construction sectors.
