Project Information:

BB20 Newhaven - Mawbanna is a plantation forestry project located at Mawbanna, approximately 30km southeast of Smithton in northwest Tasmania. It was registered in June 2026 and covers 55.94 hectares.

Plantation forestry projects under the 2022 methodology involve establishing and maintaining a new plantation forest for the commercial harvesting of wood products. Standard requirements dictate that the project must meet survival rate thresholds during initial establishment and adhere to a strict commercial rotation sequence to earn Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) for both the carbon sequestered in the trees and the subsequently harvested wood products.

The Mawbanna area is heavily utilised for forestry, dairy farming, and livestock grazing. The region is classified as high rainfall, averaging around 1,400mm annually, and the local soils are typically fertile red basalts (Ferrosols) and deep clay loams which are exceptionally well-suited for timber production.

The project proponent, Britton Brothers Proprietary Limited (widely known as Britton Timbers), is a historic Tasmanian timber enterprise based in nearby Smithton. They have long-standing roots in the area, historically operating logging tramways near Mawbanna. This project highlights the ongoing integration of traditional commercial timber harvesting with modern carbon sequestration markets in Tasmania.
