'APAC Ercildoune

APAC Ercildoune is a soil carbon project located at the Ercildoune pastoral property, situated approximately 62km from Tambo in central-western Queensland. It was registered in July 2026 and covers an estimated 6,850 hectares based on the property boundaries.

Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models projects involve changing agricultural management practices to increase the amount of carbon stored in the soil. This is quantified using rigorous baseline sampling and subsequent modelling or measurement to calculate sequestration over time. This project specifically increases soil carbon by altering the stocking rate, duration, and intensity of grazing to promote soil vegetation cover and improve overall soil health.

The Tambo region is predominantly utilised for cattle and sheep grazing. The area experiences a semi-arid climate, receiving approximately 450mm (18 inches) of rainfall annually. The Ercildoune property itself features open downs with predominantly black soil and some red country throughout, supporting native Mitchell and Buffel grass alongside patches of Gidyea and Brigalow.

An interesting local connection is that the nearby town of Tambo is famous for "Tambo Teddies," a highly successful local business creating handmade woollen bears named after historical pastoral stations across the region. One such bear is affectionately known as "Ercildoune Eric" in honour of this specific property. The carbon project is managed by APAC Natural Capital Pty Ltd, an organisation that assists the agricultural sector with carbon-related financial advice, trading, and legislative emission baselines.
