The Kayane Soil Carbon Project

The Kayane Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon project located at 183 Blue Knobby Road in Enmore, approximately 25km southeast of Armidale in the Northern Tablelands of New South Wales. It was registered on July 17, 2026, though the exact project area size is currently unknown.

Soil carbon projects operating under the Measurement and Models 2021 methodology involve implementing new or materially different agricultural management practices to increase the amount of carbon stored in the soil. The change in soil organic carbon is typically calculated over time using direct soil core sampling, laboratory analysis, and mathematical modelling. To achieve these gains, the project's activities involve applying nutrients to the land in the form of a synthetic or non-synthetic fertiliser to address a material deficiency, alongside re-establishing or rejuvenating the pasture by seeding or pasture cropping.

The Armidale and Enmore region is highly regarded for its prime grazing land, primarily supporting beef cattle and sheep farming operations. The area generally falls under a moderate-to-high rainfall classification for the region and is characterised by fertile basalt and trap (clay and loam) soils, which provide ideal conditions for pasture growth and soil carbon sequestration.

This project is led by David Joseph Stephen and David Thomas Packer as trustees for the Kayane unit trust, with agronomic services firm Precision Pastures Pty Ltd listed as an additional participant. Interestingly, public livestock auction records confirm that the "Kayane" property operates as an active cattle grazing enterprise, demonstrating how carbon farming practices and soil nutrient improvement can be directly integrated into a working agricultural system for the benefit of both the environment and livestock.
