White Hills Vineyard Revegetation Project
ERF208323
Project Information:
White Hills Vineyard Revegetation Project is an environmental planting project located in White Hills, approximately 20km southeast of Launceston in Tasmania's Tamar Valley region. It was registered in May 2026 and covers 116.84 hectares.
Environmental planting projects involve establishing permanent plantings of native trees and shrubs to restore natural ecosystem structures. Under standard requirements for this methodology, a project must typically achieve forest cover by planting at a stocking density of at least 200 stems per hectare. This specific project focuses on planting a mix of native species that reflect the structure and composition of the area's original vegetation community.
The Tamar Valley region surrounding White Hills is characterized by a mix of agricultural land uses, including world-class viticulture, livestock grazing, and cropping. The local environment features a cool-temperate climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 600 to 800mm. Soils in the area are highly regarded for agriculture, generally comprising deep, iron-rich volcanic ferrosols (basalts) and well-draining clay loams.
An interesting note about this project is its proponent, Treasury Wine Estates Vintners Limited. The global wine producer acquired the White Hills vineyard from Brown Brothers in 2013, which originally consisted of 83 planted hectares of vines within a 116-hectare total property. Because the carbon project area (116.84 hectares) closely matches the total property size of their historic acquisition, it suggests the company is holistically integrating permanent native species revegetation across the footprint of the estate to enhance local biodiversity and sequester carbon.
