Kimbar Park Soil Carbon Project

Project Information:
Kimbar Park Soil Carbon Project is a soil carbon project located at Kimbar Park on Mugincoble Lane, approximately 10km south of Parkes in the Central West region of New South Wales. It was registered in April 2026 and covers an area of 92.93 hectares out of the broader 1,760-hectare Kimbar Park property.
Soil carbon projects under the 2021 Measurement and Models methodology involve implementing new or altered agricultural management practices to increase the amount of carbon stored in the soil. Standard requirements include rigorous baseline soil sampling before activities begin, followed by regular subsequent sampling and modelling to measure the true increase in soil organic carbon. For this project, the primary activity is altering the stocking rate, duration, or intensity of grazing to promote soil vegetation cover and improve overall soil health.
The Parkes region is a well-known mixed farming area predominantly utilised for broadacre cropping, such as wheat and canola, as well as sheep and cattle grazing. The local environment features a semi-arid, temperate climate with an average annual rainfall of approximately 550 to 587.5 mm. Soils in the area are typically fertile, undulating red loams, red-brown earths, and red chromosols, which are highly productive but benefit significantly from practices that improve organic matter and soil structure.
This project is operated by the Rice family (Arice Pty Ltd) in partnership with Select Carbon Pty Ltd. Kimbar Park is a recognized mixed farming enterprise combining cropping, cattle, and an intensive sheep flock, notably sourcing high-quality Poll Merino genetics to optimise their livestock operations. By purposefully altering their grazing management, the project demonstrates how livestock operations can be actively leveraged to draw down carbon, improve pasture resilience, and enhance the underlying agricultural system.
