Maitland Foods Carbon Project 3

Project Information:

Maitland Foods Carbon Project 3 is a soil organic carbon project located near Hart in the Clare Valley region, approximately 20km northwest of Clare in South Australia. It was registered in March 2026 and covers 448.42 hectares.

Soil organic carbon projects involve implementing new agricultural management practices to increase the amount of carbon stored in the soil. Under the Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models method, standard requirements include taking baseline soil core samples, establishing a Land Management Strategy, and demonstrating a new eligible activity. In this case, the project increases carbon in the soil by applying nutrients to the land in the form of a synthetic or non-synthetic fertiliser to address a material deficiency.

The Clare Valley region is predominantly known for broadacre cropping, viticulture, and livestock farming. The area typically experiences a Mediterranean climate with moderate, winter-dominant rainfall. Soils in the region generally consist of fertile red and brown loams with clay subsoils, which are highly suitable for the region's agricultural output.

Operated by the Maitland family who have farmed the 'Anama Park' property in the area since 1866, the enterprise focuses on sustainable modern farming to produce cereal crops, export hay, legumes, and pulses. Interestingly, the farm also produces its own "Pangkarra" brand of foods, including pasta and snacks made from their locally sourced durum wheat and pulses. The farm relies heavily on precision agriculture mapping, cloud-based data, and NDVI biomass imagery to optimise crop yields alongside their carbon sequestration goals, which are managed by the project's proponent, Agriprove Solutions Pty Ltd.
