Project Information:
Limestone2026R_Gerbert_S3 is a Plantation Forestry project located approximately 30km southwest of Hamilton and 15km north of Heywood in western Victoria's Green Triangle region. It was registered in May 2026 and covers 446.38 Ha.
Plantation forestry projects that focus on avoided conversion involve keeping land as a commercial forest rather than allowing it to be permanently cleared for agricultural use. The methodology requires establishing and managing a new plantation forest for the commercial harvesting of wood products. To meet standard requirements, the trees must be planted and maintained at a sufficient stocking density to achieve a continuous forest cover, typically defined as reaching at least 2 metres in height and 20% crown cover.
The surrounding Green Triangle region, which straddles the border of Victoria and South Australia, is highly regarded as one of Australia's premier timber-producing areas. It is heavily utilised for commercial radiata pine and blue gum forestry operations, alongside sheep, cattle, and dairy farming. The environmental conditions in this part of western Victoria feature moderate to high annual rainfall. The local soil types are highly variable but generally consist of texture-contrast (duplex) sandy loams overlying heavier clays, as well as fertile basalt clays stemming from the Newer Volcanics Province.
This project is managed by OneFortyOne Plantations Pty Ltd, a major trans-Tasman sustainable forest grower that oversees more than 160,000 hectares of plantation estate across the Limestone Coast and Green Triangle. SFM Agribusiness Pty Ltd is also involved as a participant. By maintaining the land as a commercial plantation, the project sequesters carbon in both the living forest biomass and the long-lived wood products that will ultimately be processed at nearby local mills.
