Project Information:
P8 - Avoided plantation conversion on permanent timber production zone (freehold) land in Tasmania is a Plantation Forestry project located across multiple sites in Tasmania, ranging from the Huon Valley 50km south-west of Hobart, to the state's north-west coast near Burnie. It was registered in May 2026 and covers a total area of 432.68 hectares across several distinct parcels.
Plantation forestry projects under the avoided conversion sub-method involve sequestering carbon by ensuring an existing or harvested plantation is not cleared for non-forested land. Standard requirements for this methodology mandate establishing and maintaining a new plantation forest for the commercial harvesting of wood products, meeting specific tree stocking densities, and committing to a nominated permanence period (typically 25 or 100 years) to ensure the carbon remains stored.
The regions encompassing these project sites, notably within the Circular Head, Central Coast, Waratah-Wynyard, and Huon Valley local government areas, are prominent hubs for commercial forestry, dairy farming, and cattle grazing. These regions are characterized by a high to very high rainfall climate. The soil types vary across the dispersed locations but predominantly feature rich, deep basalt-derived ferrosols in the north-west, alongside dermosols and kurosols, which provide optimal nutrient profiles and growing conditions for commercial timber.
Managed by Forestry Tasmania, this project specifically operates on freehold permanent timber production zone land. By formally committing to re-establishing a commercial plantation, the project secures continuous carbon sequestration benefits and actively prevents the emissions that would have occurred had the harvested land been converted to agricultural pasture.
