Project Information:
Lenah2026R_Cilfa_S2 is a plantation forestry project located near Kempton, approximately 40km north of Hobart in Tasmania's Southern Midlands region. It was registered in May 2026 and covers 238.24 ha.
Plantation forestry projects of this type involve converting an existing short-rotation plantation forest into a long-rotation plantation. Under standard requirements for this methodology, trees originally planted and intended to be harvested early for short-term products like pulp or woodchips are retained to grow for an extended period. This extended lifecycle allows the trees to sequester additional atmospheric carbon before they are ultimately commercially harvested for solid wood products, such as sawlogs.
The Kempton area is known for broad-acre farming, particularly sheep grazing for fine grade wool, alongside commercial forestry operations. Positioned within a rain shadow from the Central Highlands, the environment is relatively dry, experiencing lower annual rainfall typically between 500mm and 600mm. Soils in the region vary but generally include non-rocky soils on gentle slopes and podzols, which can sometimes be susceptible to erosion and salinity.
This project is run by Lenah Estate Pty Ltd, with SFM Environmental Solutions acting as the property manager and project agent. Lenah Estate was established after the international forestry investor New Forests acquired a large Tasmanian plantation estate from Norske Skog in early 2020. SFM Environmental Solutions, a 100% Tasmanian-owned forest management company, manages these lands to balance long-term commercial timber production with sustainable environmental outcomes.
