24 Degree Forest – Rainforest rehabilitation on slopes and riparian zones – Doon Doon

Project Information:
24 Degree Forest – Rainforest rehabilitation on slopes and riparian zones – Doon Doon is an Environmental planting project located at Doon Doon in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, southwest of Murwillumbah. It was registered in February 2026 and covers 72.12 hectares.
Environmental planting projects involve establishing and maintaining permanent mixed-species native plantings on land that has been predominantly used for agricultural purposes for at least five years prior. To meet standard scheme requirements and establish a viable forest canopy, trees are typically planted at a density of at least 200 stems per hectare.
Situated within the Mount Warning (Wollumbin) Caldera, the local Doon Doon area is heavily utilised for cattle farming, grazing, and general agricultural operations. The region experiences a sub-tropical, high-rainfall climate; notably, a local rain gauge recorded a staggering 4,607mm of rain during the 2022 floods, setting a state record for annual rainfall. The highly fertile soils are largely basalt-derived and feature alluvial clays, making them ideal for sustaining sub-tropical rainforest ecosystems.
An interesting feature of this project is its successful integration with active agriculture and multiple environmental schemes. Located on the "Karinya Downs" property, the reforestation efforts run alongside a productive cattle breeding business. Furthermore, this ACCU project shares its footprint with Australia's second registered project under the legislated Nature Repair Market, demonstrating an innovative model for project stacking. The project proponent, 24 Degree Forest Pty Ltd, also utilises the site as an educational model. Shortly after registration, they hosted community planting days and free carbon training workshops to teach local Northern Rivers farmers how rainforest restoration can provide an alternative revenue stream without displacing agriculture. Additionally, the dense closed-canopy rainforest systems being planted by the proponent have been shown to reduce local maximum peak temperatures by up to 4.1°C compared to open landscapes, providing valuable climate cooling and moisture retention benefits.
