Project Information:

24 Degree Forest – Rainforest rehabilitation on slopes and riparian zones – Doon Doon is an environmental planting project located at Doon Doon, approximately 20km southwest of Murwillumbah and 40km southwest of Tweed Heads in the Northern Rivers region of NSW. It was registered in February 2026 and covers a project area of 72.12 hectares.

Environmental planting projects involve establishing permanent plantings of a mix of native tree species on land that has been previously cleared and predominantly used for agricultural purposes for at least five years. The standard methodology requires that trees are planted at a density sufficient to achieve a true forest environment, usually requiring hundreds of stems per hectare to eventually reach a minimum of 20% crown cover and 2 meters in height.

The Northern Rivers area is known for its high rainfall and widespread agricultural use, particularly cattle grazing and dairy farming. The environment is subtropical, and while the regional soils can be highly fertile, the steep gradients and winding creeks make certain areas highly susceptible to flooding, severe soil erosion, and landslides.

This project was specifically designed to target these vulnerable agricultural landscapes. The proponent, 24 Degree Forest Pty Ltd, is an organization that works with farmers to re-establish native rainforest on degraded riparian zones and unproductive farm slopes that are notionally steeper than 24 degrees. By fencing off these hard-to-cultivate areas for carbon sequestration, the project builds farmland resilience, suppresses invasive weeds, and creates vital biodiversity and wildlife corridors, all without taking away the farmer's productive grazing land.
