Greening Australia and Canopy Nature Based Solutions: National Restoration Program 2026

Project Information:

Greening Australia and Canopy Nature Based Solutions: National Restoration Program 2026 is a large-scale national environmental planting project located across multiple diverse sites in Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, and New South Wales. It was registered in April 2026 and covers a massive total area of 7,024.44 hectares.

Environmental planting projects involve establishing and maintaining permanent, mixed-species plantings of native trees and shrubs. Under the Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings (FullCAM) methodology, these plantings must be established at a sufficient density to achieve true forest cover (typically over 200 stems per hectare or sufficient to reach 20% crown cover). The species mix selected carefully reflects the natural structure and composition of the local native vegetation communities in each specific region.

Because this is a large national aggregation, the project coordinates map to multiple distinct landscapes. Properties are located near major regional centres including Brookton in the Western Australian Wheatbelt, Port Lincoln on South Australia's Eyre Peninsula, Bairnsdale and Omeo in Victoria's Gippsland region, and both Byron Bay and Yass in New South Wales. General land use across these areas is primarily agricultural, encompassing broadacre cropping, sheep and cattle grazing, and mixed farming operations.

Correspondingly, the environmental conditions are highly diverse. The project sites range from high-rainfall coastal and tableland environments (such as the Northern Rivers and Gippsland) to semi-arid and Mediterranean climates (like the WA Wheatbelt and Eyre Peninsula). Soil types are equally varied, encompassing rich volcanic basalts and clay loams in the eastern states through to sandy duplex and sandy loam soils in the west and south.

Canopy Nature Based Solutions Pty Ltd, the project proponent, is a for-purpose subsidiary of Greening Australia. The organisation leverages over 40 years of experience in large-scale native reforestation to design projects that go beyond simple carbon sequestration. They focus heavily on delivering high-quality biodiversity impacts, creating landscape connectivity, and reversing nature loss across Australian ecosystems.
