Project Information:

AJW is a plantation forestry project located approximately 4km south-west of the town of Trafalgar in the Gippsland region of Victoria. Registered in December 2025, this project covers 18.39 hectares of land situated in the fertile foothills of the Strzelecki Ranges. The area is positioned between the Princes Highway and the steeper forestry slopes to the south, placing it in a prime agricultural zone.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. Specifically, it involves the establishment of a new plantation forest on land that has not been forested for at least seven years. Unlike environmental planting projects which are permanent, this methodology allows for the commercial harvesting of wood products. Credits are generated based on the long-term average carbon sequestered in the trees and the carbon stored in the harvested timber products over time. Standard requirements for this method include strict rules preventing the clearing of existing native forest to establish the plantation.

Regionally, the Trafalgar and Yarragon area is known for its high rainfall and productive soils, typically comprising fertile clay loams and red ferrosols (volcanic soils) which support robust dairy farming and potato cultivation. The presence of the project in this location aligns with the broader forestry land use common in the Strzelecki Ranges to the south.

The project proponent, Inge Mitchell, is a known member of the local community, having served on the committee of the Yarragon Arts Alliance. The project also lists Scott McArdle as a participant; McArdle is a prominent figure in the Gippsland energy transition sector and the Managing Director of Nexsys Industries Consulting, indicating the project benefits from professional carbon and land-use expertise.
