Project Information:
AA2026R_McDonaldL_S1S3 is a Plantation Forestry project located approximately 12 kilometers southwest of Scottsdale in North East Tasmania. Registered on December 22, 2025, the project covers 63.65 hectares of land within the Dorset local government area. This region is a significant hub for Tasmania's agricultural and timber industries, featuring a landscape mosaic of dairy farming, grazing, and commercial softwood and hardwood plantations.
The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative-Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. It specifically combines two activities: Schedule 1, which involves establishing a new plantation forest on land that has been clear of forest for at least seven years, and Schedule 3, which credits the avoided conversion of an existing plantation to non-forested land (such as pasture). By maintaining and expanding these timber stocks, the project sequesters carbon in the trees and wood products while allowing for commercial harvesting.
Environmentally, North East Tasmania provides optimal conditions for forestry, characterized by high annual rainfall (typically exceeding 900mm) and fertile, well-drained red basalt soils (Ferrosols). These conditions support rapid growth rates for species such as Pinus radiata and Eucalyptus nitens. The project is part of the "ActivAcre" program, managed by SFM Environmental Solutions, which allows landowners to lease underutilized farm areas for carbon and timber production. The "McDonaldL" in the project name likely refers to the participating landholder, while "AA" identifies the ActivAcre portfolio.
