Big Jack Permanent Forest Project

Project Information:

Big Jack Permanent Forest Project is a plantation forestry project located near Cathcart, approximately 25km east of Bombala in the Snowy Monaro region of New South Wales. Registered in January 2026, the project covers roughly 147 hectares. The site sits in the immediate vicinity of Big Jack Mountain, a prominent peak within the South East Forest National Park system, which likely lends its name to the project.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative, Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. Specifically, it involves the transition of an existing plantation forest into a permanent forest. This activity allows a plantation owner (typically growing softwood species like Pinus radiata) to forego the scheduled harvest and instead maintain the forest permanently. This generates carbon credits by storing carbon in the trees that would otherwise be removed for timber, and is often utilized in areas where the plantation is at risk of being cleared for conversion to non-forest agriculture.

The surrounding Bombala and Cathcart region is a well-established forestry hub, known for its cool temperate climate and high rainfall, which typically exceeds 700mm annually. The landscape consists of rolling grazing country and steep timbered ridges, with soils generally derived from granite and sedimentary rock, supporting both commercial timber and native vegetation.

This project is managed by Carbon Fix Pty Limited, a proponent with a portfolio of carbon projects across New South Wales, including soil carbon and environmental planting activities.
