Project Information:

Penola Plantations 2026 – P26-4 Perkins is a plantation forestry project located approximately 25km east of Penola, situated just across the South Australian border in the West Wimmera local government area of Victoria. It was registered in September 2025 and covers 94.47 ha.

Plantation forestry projects operating under the avoided conversion methodology involve preventing an existing or harvested plantation from being permanently cleared and converted into non-forested land, such as agricultural pasture. By continuing the plantation and establishing a new forest for the commercial harvesting of wood products, the project actively sequesters carbon. Standard requirements for this method typically include maintaining a tree stocking density that will achieve full forest cover (usually defined as at least 20% crown cover and a height of 2 meters at maturity) and managing the estate according to regional commercial forestry codes.

This project sits within the "Green Triangle", a highly productive region spanning the South Australian and Victorian borders that is famous for its extensive commercial softwood (radiata pine) and hardwood (blue gum) forestry operations, alongside cattle grazing, broadacre cropping, and the renowned Coonawarra wine district. The region generally experiences a Mediterranean climate with moderate to high winter-dominant rainfall, typically ranging from 600mm to 800mm annually. Soils across this landscape vary from sandy loams over clay to the famous limestone-based terra rossa, which provide excellent drainage and moisture availability for deep-rooted timber species.

The project is managed by Timberlands Pacific Pty Ltd on behalf of the Green Triangle Forest Operating Sub Trust. Timberlands Pacific is a major independent forest management company that manages large-scale estates across the Green Triangle, producing hundreds of thousands of tonnes of forest products annually. The company aligns its operations with Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) standards, demonstrating a commitment to environmentally responsible, socially beneficial, and economically viable forestry practices.
