Project Information:

Penola Plantations 2026 – P26-3 Myaring West is a plantation forestry project located in the Glenelg Shire near Myaring, Victoria. Situated approximately 25km east of Penola near the South Australian border, the project was registered in October 2025 and spans an area of 269.75 hectares. The area is part of the renowned "Green Triangle," a major forestry region well-known for extensive commercial plantations as well as grazing and agricultural operations.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative-Plantation Forestry) Methodology Determination 2022. Projects under this methodology earn Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) by establishing new plantations, transitioning short-rotation to long-rotation forests, or avoiding the conversion of existing plantations to non-forested land. This specific project sequesters carbon by avoiding the conversion of an existing or harvested plantation back to agricultural land, opting instead to maintain a continuing plantation forest for the commercial harvesting of wood products.

Environmentally, the Glenelg region experiences a relatively high and reliable average annual rainfall, typically ranging from 550mm to over 800mm depending on the specific topography. The soils in this area are commonly acidic duplex soils, featuring sandy or loamy topsoils over heavier clay subsoils, which are well-suited to large-scale plantation forestry despite their inherent susceptibility to acidification under intensive agriculture.

Managed by Timberlands Pacific Pty Ltd on behalf of the Green Triangle Forest Operating Sub Trust, this project is part of a much larger estate of forestry assets. Interestingly, local forestry operations partnered with the proponent in the Myaring West area have historically utilised drone flyovers to monitor and protect koala populations during active timber harvesting, demonstrating a proactive approach to wildlife management alongside commercial forestry.
