Tyagarah Collective

Project Information:

The Tyagarah Collective is an environmental planting project located in the coastal locality of Tyagarah, approximately 7 kilometers northwest of Byron Bay in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales. Registered on November 20, 2025, the project covers a small area of 10.51 hectares. The surrounding region is a mix of conservation areas, such as the Tyagarah Nature Reserve, and rural land uses including tea tree production and lifestyle properties.

The project operates under the Carbon Credits (Carbon Farming Initiative) (Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings, FullCAM) Methodology Determination 2024. This methodology, which replaced the 2014 version, credits landholders for sequestering carbon by establishing permanent forest cover using native tree and shrub species. A key requirement is that the planting must have the potential to attain a crown cover of at least 20% and a height of 2 meters. The specific 2024 determination streamlines eligibility, notably allowing for better preparation by permitting the holding of seeds prior to registration.

Environmentally, the Tyagarah area experiences a high-rainfall subtropical climate. The terrain typically features low-nutrient, acidic soils often associated with "Wallum" coastal heathland communities, ranging from sandy podzols to potential acid sulfate soils in lower-lying areas. The project notes indicate the planting of a mixed-species native belt designed to reflect this specific local vegetation structure. Given the small size and the name "Collective," the project likely represents a private landholder or community group dedicated to restoring biodiversity corridors adjacent to the nearby sensitive coastal habitats.
