Chillers Run Carbon Project

Project Information:

Chillers Run Carbon Project is a soil carbon sequestration project located on the 'Chillers Run' property on Kangaroo Island, South Australia. The project is situated roughly 30km south of the agricultural hub of Parndana, situated inland from the island's southern coast. Registered in October 2025, the project covers approximately 944 hectares of agricultural land.

The project operates under the Estimation of Soil Organic Carbon Sequestration using Measurement and Models (2021) methodology. This method awards carbon credits for increases in soil carbon stocks resulting from changes in land management. Specifically, this project aims to sequester carbon by applying synthetic or non-synthetic fertilizers to address material nutrient deficiencies in the soil. By optimizing soil nutrition, the project intends to boost pasture growth and root biomass, thereby drawing more carbon from the atmosphere into the soil profile.

Kangaroo Island typically experiences a Mediterranean climate with distinct wet winters and dry summers, providing reliable growing seasons for pasture. The region's soils often consist of ironstone gravels (lateritic soils) or sandy loams over clay, which can be naturally nutrient-deficient; addressing these deficiencies is a common strategy to improve both agricultural productivity and soil carbon levels. Publicly available footage of the "Chillers Run" property indicates it is an active sheep grazing operation.
