Kunmallup Tree Project

Project Information:
Kunmallup Tree Project is an environmental planting project located near the township of Woodanilling in the Great Southern agricultural region of Western Australia. Registered in January 2026, the project spans 248.67 hectares and is primarily situated across lower-productivity land on Bindi Murray's working farm.
The project operates under the Reforestation by Environmental or Mallee Plantings (FullCAM) methodology. Environmental planting projects of this type involve establishing permanent plantings of mixed native tree and shrub species that are endemic to the local area. To meet standard methodology requirements, these species are typically planted at a density of at least 200 stems per hectare to ensure they eventually achieve a minimum of 20% crown cover and a height of two metres.
The Woodanilling and Wagin region is well known for broadacre agriculture, with land use primarily focused on sheep grazing and cropping operations. The region's environment features a semi-arid to temperate climate with moderate winter rainfall. The local soil profile is historically characterized by rich red loams on the hillsides, though widespread land clearing has left large sections of the lower-lying agricultural land highly susceptible to dryland salinity.
Interestingly, the name "Kunmallup" is derived from the Aboriginal Noongar word "Kumal," which translates to brush-tailed possum. The Kunmallup Tree Project was a successful recipient of funding under the Western Australian Government's Carbon Farming and Land Restoration Program. Supported by South West Natural Resource Management (SWNRM), the project was established to drive biodiverse plantings that will provide vital shelter for livestock, connect remnant vegetation to nearby native reserves, and actively reduce soil salinity.
